General in chief, US Grant forced the surrender of Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia at the Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Although other Confederate armies would surrender later in the Spring, Lee's surrender to Grant basically put an end to the Southern bid for independence.
