And excess energy results in fat storing. Carbohydrates are addictive in a similar way as narcotics, which makes the body crave more carbohydrate rich food even though the energy it contains is not needed.

A low calorie diet means that you limit the amount of calories you consume. And the goal is to eat less energy than your body uses during the day. This means that the body will need to use it's own energy storage in order to get enough energy to function properly.

Which diet is better depends on the person. Some people has an easier time to lose weight by counting calories while others has an easier time to lose weight while limiting their carbohydrate intake. But I would personally recommend to use a low carbohydrate diet instead of a low calorie diet. Carbohydrates are non-essential (the body don't need them) unlike protein and fats which are essential (the body needs them). So to limit the intake of carbohydrates is according to me the better choice.

There are multiple studies on carbohydrate, protein and fat intake and it's effect. Many studies contradicts each other and it's impossible to know what's right and what's wrong. But several studies have shown that low carbohydrate diets are very effective when it comes to weight loss.
