It depends on how bad the mastitis is, when you milk her and only see a few "flakes" then apply a mint cream (such as, dynamint or udder comfort) after she has been thoroughly milked.

If when you milk her the milk looks like cottage cheese and the infected quarter is hard than you will need to treat her with an antibiotic that is inserted directly into the teat end. It is recommended that you talk to your veterinarian for the available antibiotics that are available in your area. You can also apply some mint cream as well as the antibiotic.

Hope that this helps, if you have any further questions let me know!

The same way you would with dairy cows: inject a bit of antibiotic into the teat and separate her in an area where she doesn't have to move around much or get too excited to damage the udder much.

25 percent of all cows are culled because of mastitis?

Yes. Once mastitis has set in, the quarter or quarters in the cow's udder can become infectious to the point where that quarter is no longer functionable to synthesize and secrete milk. Since mastitis is an infection of the udder, pains also have to be taken to take care of the cow and make sure the milk is not combined with cows that do not have mastitis. So, logically, the best way to "treat" cows with mastitis is to cull them and have them in a separate parlor where they can be treated, then once they are better ship them out. It's sad, but its reality.

What causes shipping fever in cattle?

Shipping fever is the cattlemen's term for a complex of upper respiratory and pulmonary infections in cattle that commonly arise in a group of cattle shortly after they have been transported or shipped. The initial infection is typically one of several viruses ranging from IBR to PI3; this then predisposes the cattle to secondary bacterial infections such as Haemophilus.

Why is a cow's bag so swollen that she can't nurse?

This can be a result of a severe case of mastitis. If the cow will let you, try to squeeze some milk into a container of some sort (just so you can see what the milk looks like, it is a good idea to throw the container out after use). If the milk is clear, smells bad, and could have white chunks present than she definitely has mastitis. You will have to treat the cow with an antibiotic that is administered through the teat canal. If you are still unsure what the problem is it is best that you consult your veterinarian, especially before treatment.
