In 2nd Samuel 7:2, King David said "Here I am living in a house of cedars while the Ark of the true God sits in the midst of tent cloths" expressing his feelings and desire to build the house for Jehovah (the temple).
In verses 12 & 13, Jehovah told David that it was his son who would build the temple. David did much to collect many of the supplies needed to build the temple as recorded in 1 Chronicles 29:1-9.
In 1 Chronicles 28:10, David tells his son "See, now, for Jehovah has chosen you to build a house as a sanctuary. Be courageous and go to work." (NWT)
