Immigration from the UK to America rose enormously during the 1840s, mainly because of a vast increase in steamship lines. Fares became very cheap. From Liverpool, Glasgow and Queenstown it was sometimes possible to get a one-way steerage ticket for as low as five pounds. Additionally, Cunard added the new port in Queenstown, making it possible for people to get on the boat in Cork, rather than having to take the ferry to Liverpool.

The Irish came to America for survival and economic reasons. The potato famine was happening in Ireland and they needed to emigrate from Ireland or else they would almost certainly starve to death. America also offered them more opportunities to work.
