From one perspective, it really doesn't matter much. To improve physical fitness the important thing is how hard and how long someone is working out. And it's easily possible to work just as hard cycling as you can by walking or running.

Cycling might be a tad better as it doesn't have the heavy shock loads of landing on your foot on each step, but that's about it.


It's really not as much about being "better" as it is about being "different". If you look at pure cardio effort, it's all down to how hard you're trying rather than what you're doing. IT's just as possible to do casual cruising (with little exercise result) on the bike, as it is to plod around the jogging track w/o seeing much improvement.

Bicycling is low-impact and allows you to go some useful distances while exercises. But you will need a bike, which will have to be stored somewhere, might get stolen etc. For running all you need is a pair of shoes and a track suit. cheaper, easier to care for.
