It depends on which kind of sugar, whether it's sugar cane or sugar beets. Both are harvested using mechanical harvesters, but both machines are radically different. If you search Google Images for both kinds, there are numerous pictures.

It's harvested similar to how corn is harvested for silage, with the stems, leaves and everything else are chopped up and thrown into a truck by machinery.


The "cane" or stem portion of this large grass is the part used for sugar.

In order to harvest sugar cane, you will need to cut it to just about ground level. It takes almost a year to grow and harvest fresh sugar cane.

The stem is the sugar 'cane'. It's full of sweet juice. In areas such as Hawaii where sugar cane is raised, kids enjoy sucking on freshly cut sugar cane as a treat.
