All cactus plants are succulents, but not all succulents are cactus plants. So it's to be expected that cactus and succulent plants remind one another of each other. For example, the Caralluma socotrana of Africa and India resembles the totem pole cactus [Pachycereus schottii v monstrose] in similarly knobby stems. In the way of another example, Echinopsis spp resembles the African hat cactus [Hoodia spp] in similarly short, branching stems.
There are a number of euphorbias that are native to African deserts that closely resemble cacti from the New World.

∙ 9y agoCacti are natives only to the Americas so do not occur naturally in Africa. Any cacti found growing in Africa got there with the help of man. They can become a noxious invasive species when they grow out of their natural habitat as they have no enemies that help keep them in check.

∙ 8y agoQueen of the Night cactus was imported from South America and grows like a weed in South Africa. There are over 200 species of cactuses that were brought over by collectors. These cactuses have spread and take over grazing land for cattle. There are native succulents such as the living stones or lithops. Other succulents in South Africa are Stapelia, and various Adromishus.
