Thomas Jefferson was leader of the Democratic-Republican party, organized from the group originally known as the Anti-Federalists, and became the first of four Presidents representing this party.

James Madison, James Monroe and John Quincy Adams also served as Democratic-Republican Presidents, although John Quincy Adams ran for a second term (and was defeated) on the National Republican Ticket (aka Anti-Jackson Ticket).
