John Kennedy was the first and only Roman Catholic president. Some of the others, such as John and John Q Adams (Unitaritans), Jefferson(Deist) and Madison(non-traditional Episcopalian) were not mainstream Protestants , but they were not Catholics either, so I suppose they were protestants.
The Founding Fathers may have been dipicted as Christians, but in actuality were more Deists or Idealists instead. If you notice, they were also the ones who started the Free Masons.

All of the Presidents have professed some form of Christianity. They did not all accept the divinity of Jesus and they did not all make their exact beliefs clear and or join any organized church. There has only been one Roman Catholic. Some few were evangelical ("born-again') Christians.
The presidents either died or resigned, and their vice presidents took office, or the vice presidents were elected on their own.
