Freedom
African Americans have had a long struggle in America, being first regarded, by the dominant European Americans, as a type of domestic animal, then as an inferior type of human being, and finally being recognized as people who have the same rights and value as any other type of person. This evolution has taken hundreds of years and is not entirely complete, even now (although the election of an African American President is a significant milestone).
The most important gain for African Americans who were slaves in the South was Lincoln's Emancipation. This was because the President of the United States declared them to be free in the South. They knew Lincoln could not enforce the Emancipation, but it gave them hope for the future and most importantly, they could escape to the North and be safe from being returned as it had been the law before the War. In addition to the the aforementioned gains, some former slaves found a home in the US Army. Many saw war action and as a result of being a soldier, something quite new to them, it may have generated a good degree of pride within themselves.
