The refused to negotiate the sale of Alta California and Nuevo Laredo and they refused to accept the Texas claim that the Rio Grande was the border between Texas and Mexico.
The Texas claim is based on being a break way Republic from Mexico whose claim is based on Spanish exploration and settlement. Since Texas had no exploration of the area in question the Texas claim to lands along the north and eastern banks of the Rio Grande lack merit and standing. But that was all settled effectively in the 1850 compromise. The US did uphold the Texas claim to El Paso and in the County Club border settlement, the Supreme Court also sided against New Mexico.
Texas surrendered its claim to New Mexico; this was a bill to defuse the slave question (i.e: it had nothing to do with the country of Mexico, but between the U.S. North and South).

The issue of the dispute of the border centered on slavery. Texas could claim what they wanted to claim regarding their borders as long as they were a Republic. The moment they became a part of the Union they were forced to play by a different set of rules. The 1850 Compromise was disliked by both the Southern and Northern legislators but was a temporary solution that avoided the Civil War for a brief period of time.
