The only previous answer I found here simply said, "The south side-Jonesboro".

Actually, the City of Jonesboro, and the area around Jonesboro, is one of the nicer areas of Clayton County, Georgia. Jonesboro is located about 20 miles south of the downtown Atlanta Five Points area.

And the question that reads, "Which side of Atlanta is the bad side of the city?" is difficult to answer in such a simplistic manner.

Yes. There are probably bad more areas, in terms of square miles, on the south side of Atlanta than on any other side. However, if you are considering moving to the Atlanta area, or just looking for a place to stay in the area, then here are the places to avoid:

Clayton County - and Jonesboro is in Clayton County, but it is by far NOT the worse place in Clayton County. In fact, the Lake Spivey and Jodeco Lake areas, around Jonesboro, are among the nicest neighborhoods in Metro Atlanta. It is relatively safe for you to go to those neighborhoods and look around.

The part of Clayton County that you should probably avoid are the North Clayton area near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), the City of Forest Park, the Riverdale area, and the portion of the City of College Park that is in Clayton County. Note: College Park is located in south Fulton County and overlaps into north Clayton County.

NOW... there are other bad areas around Atlanta, notably:

- the South DeKalb County area - that area is southeast of the City of Atlanta;

- Northwest Atlanta - the area in the City of Atlanta southwest and northwest of the Georgia Dome and World Congress Center;

- West/Northwest Atlanta - along US Highway 78 aka Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, and the Hollywood Road areas.

- south Fulton County - notably the areas close to Old National Highway (aka Georgia Highway 279) in, and near to, the City of College park. Note: I don't want to lead you to believe all of College Park is "bad". The areas of College Park around Rugby Avenue, College Avenue, and Virginia Avenue are actually pretty nice. And the largest private college preparatory school in America is located in College Park, Georgia - that would be Woodward Academy, which has a campus any college, or university, would be proud of - definitely worth seeing.

- Southwest Atlanta - including the West End community, the areas of Atlanta along Lee Street, Campbellton Road, and Greenbriar Plaza Shopping Mall;

Anytime you are in Atlanta, just remember it can be a dangerous place. Atlanta has been ranked among the top cities in America in several categories of violent crime, including violent murders, for many years.

FOR VISITORS TO ATLANTA:

The relatively SAFE AREAS of Metro Atlanta that you may be interested in visiting are:

- along Peachtree Street/Road*, near Peachtree Center, and areas out to Buckhead and beyond. *NOTE: Peachtree Road is an extention of Peachtree Street.

- Stone Mountain Park (east of Atlanta in DeKalb County);

- Six Flags - an amusement park west of Atlanta just off I-20 and just across the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County;

- Lenox Square Mall/Phipps Plaza Mall on Peachtree north of Buckhead;

- Emory University area (North Decatur Road and Clifton Road areas);

- Oglethorpe University (Peachtree Road north of Lenox Square/Phipps Plaza);

- the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca Cola near Centennial Park (just west of Peachtree Center near downtown Atlanta);

- Camp Creek Marketplace (shopping Pavilion) on northside of Camp Creek Parkway about 5 miles west of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. When traveling from the airport, it is just past I-285;

- Virginia Avenue NEAR the airport is relatively safe - I notice many people walking along Virginia Avenue NEAR the airport.

Again... Be aware that any place in Atlanta can be dangerous. I have just tried to tell you of the places that would be reasonably safe enough for you to visit while in Atlanta.

Hey! If you are in Downtown Atlanta, be aware of The Friendship Force. They wear uniforms that could be mistaken as police uniforms, but they are not police. They are there to answer your questions and help you get around Atlanta. Some of them ride Segways. Just trying to make your visit to Atlanta a more pleasant experience.

Why I know this: I was born in Atlanta and have lived in Metro Atlanta just about all of my life.
