How did the civil war in the US finished?

Steady attrition of the Confederate armies, which had no reinforcements, and an official policy of burning crops and slaughtering livestock.ANSWER:In Virginia, General Grant at last had achieved his goal ~ he gained control of Richmond. In April 1865, he seized the railroads supplying Richmond. The Confederate troops had to evacuate Petersburg and Richmond. Lee retreated westward with nearly 50,000 men. He hoped to join forces with General Joseph Johnston in North Carolina. But Grant overtook him, and barred his way with an army of almost 113,000 troops. Lee realized that continued fighting would mean useless loss of lives. He wrote Grant and asked for an interview to arrange surrender terms. On April 9, 1865, the two generals met at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. Grant offered generous terms, and Lee accepted them with deep appreciation. Confederate soldiers received a day's rations and were released on parole. They were allowed to keep their horses and mules to take home "to put in a crop." Officials could keep their side arms. Lee never offered his sword to Grant in surrender, and Grant never asked for it. Although both men fought on opposite sides of the war, Grant had great respect and admiration for Robert E. Lee.Five days later, on April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

In Virginia What side were they on in the civil war?

Why was Robert e lee important in the south side of the civil war?

As the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, Lee staved off numerous attempts by the Army of the Potomac to capture Richmond. However, his invasions of the North in the Fall of 1862 and Summer of 1863 were failures. Davis finally appointed him Supreme Commander of the Southern Forces late in the war, but it was too late to coordinate the efforts of all the remaining southern troops. He surrendered to Grant at Appomattox in April of 1865.

Why did Lee surrendered at Appomattox and a brief description of the Appomattox Campaign. I really enjoy History and this is one of the Civil War Campaigns I haven't quite got to yet.?

Lee surrendered at Appomattox because his Army had been hopelessly encircled and his soldiers were starving. Brief description of the Appomattox Campaign. After the defeat of his right flank at Five Forks on Apr. 1,1865, Lee decided to evacuate Richmond and Petersburg, hoping to take then his 30,000 men around the Federal left flank to join up with Gen. Joseph Johnston's army, which was falling back in North Carolina. The Confederates were retreating towards Amelia Court House with the final goal of reaching Danville, marching south of the Appomattox River, along the railroad Richmond -- Danville. On Apr.5 they found on their route Gen. Sheridan's forces deployed at Jetersville, intercepting their retreat. Lee changed his plan, assigning as new line of retreat Sailor's Creek -- Burkesville, where he planned to resume the retreat towards Danville. The Confederates bypassed Jetersville concentrating on the Sailor's Creek, an affluent of the Appomattox, where, on Apr. 6, the Union II Corps overwhelmed their rear guard taking 7,000 prisoners , including 6 generals. Burkesville had in the meantime fallen in the Union hands. On Apr. 7 the pursuing Federal forces forced Lee to cross to the north side of Appomattox at Farmsville and carry on his retreat westward towards Appomattox Station -- Lynchburg But now, Sheridan with the Federal V Corps and Gen. Ord's Army of the James, marching along the south bank of the Appomattox River, were running the bowstring and by so doing managed to arrive at Appomattox Station before the Confederate, blocking their retreat. The encirclement was completed by Union Army of the Potomac, which deployed on the back of Lee's army. Early on Apr. 9, the Confederate division of Gen. Gordon tried to break through to open the route to Lynchburg but this last attack of the Army of Northern Virginia was repulsed and lee surrendered his sword and his army at Appomattox Court House at 4 P.M. I hope I helped you.

What happened when general lee surrendered to general grant at appomattox?

Grant gave Lee surprisingly generous terms. If the men would hand in their weapons, and sign the pledge never to take up arms against the United States again, they could go home in peace, and there would be no hangings, jailings, or other persecution.
