In the East, it was the Confederates that won almost every battle. The Union only won at Antietam in September, and that was through an extraordinary accident.
In the West, it was the other way round. Grant was coming to the fore, and his victory at Shiloh marked the end of Confederate ascendancy in the Mississippi valley. Only Braxton Bragg's invasion of Kentucky appeared to upset the record, but he soon retreated.

Both battles of Bull Run (Manassas) were won by the South, and the North lost. The first battle in July 1861 was won by Generals Johnston and Beauregard. The second battle in August 1862 was won by General Lee.
