Ownership of a fully automatic firearm is permiited in ALL states EXCEPT CA, DE, DC, HI, NY, WA. You must comply with a Federal law in other states, the 1934 National Firearms Act. This requires that a person recieving a full auto firearm undergo a background check, have approval of local law enforcement, and pay a $200 per gun transfer tax. Legal full autos that can be transferred to a private citizen must already have been registered by May 1986- no new full autos can be registerered. Since the supply is finite, prices are VERY high. A LEGAL M16 rifle is about $16,000.
Federal law allows for ownership of pre-1986 full auto guns, some states restrict them. one can just find a pre-1986 full auto for sell and buy it and wait several months for paperwork and fingerprinting and tax stamps to purchase one, also the guns are usually some what expensive, but it is legal in most states, just more complicated then buying a semi-auto gun.
Georgia
Most states.
Because its fully automatic, and was not importable pre 1986 (when the assault weapons ban was introduced). Only fully automatic weapons produced pre 1986 and were already legally owned in the US are now legal in the US. Although it IS legal for Police Departments to own Glock 18's, if they have been trained by Glock. It is also legal to own (in certain states, with strict stipulations), a Glock 17 (or any other model besides the 18) with a fully automatic sear. Which is essentially a Glock 18. **I Am NOT A Lawyer***
You can. It is not against the law to own fully automatic weapons provided you follow all the rules. 21, clean criminal record, money to buy, CLEO signature, etc..
It is legal for a private citizen to own a fully automatic rifle in MOST US states IF you comply with Federal law (National Firearms Act- requires registration of full autos with the BATFE). Rather than list all the states that DO, why not post the state or states you are asking about?
Only if you have a automatic weapons lisence. Actually, a more correct answer is, it depends on where you are. In the U.S. they are legal to own, in most states, if it was manufactured before May of 1986. You do not have to have an automatic weapons license, but you do have to pay a fee to register it with the ATF.
A fully automatic weapon means you can hold down the trigger and it will continuously fire. Semiautomatic means you fire one round for each pull of the trigger. A selective fire weapon is capable of fully automatic fire, and lets you select between the two. To own a fully automatic weapon in the US, you need a Class III National Firearms Act tax stamp for the firearm. The importation of fully automatic weapons for civilian sales was barred in 1968, and the domestic manufacture of fully automatic weapons for civilian sales was barred in 1986 - however, weapons of either type manufactured before the effective date of their import/manufacture can still legal be transferred between licenced civilian owners.
IF you are properly Licenced.
In the United States, it's 18 to purchase a regular Title I long gun (rifles and shotguns), and 21 for handguns and NFA items (destructive devices, short barreled rifles and shotguns, fully automatic weapons, etc.).
Yes
No new legal full-autos have been manufactured for the civilian population since 1986. Fully automatic weapons and destructive devices (grenades, bazookas, etc.) have been taxed and regulated since 1934. The National Firearms Act of 1934 requires that before a private citizen may take possession of a fully-automatic firearm he must pay a $200 tax to the Internal Revenue Service and be approved by the Treasury Department to own the firearm, which is registered to the owner with the federal government. @ 150,000 fully automatic weapons are owned by private citizens. Since 1934, I can only remember reading of three LEGALLY OWNED AND REGISTERED fully atuomatic weapons being used in a crime. One of those was committed by a Police Officer. Now, if you buy into the gun control advocates definition of "assault" rifle as anything that "looks like" a fully automatic rifle and fires once each time you pull the trigger, the number is eaisly into the millions.
As long as you are not a felon and are properly licensed to carry and own a weapon in your state. Actually, that answer is only partially correct, at least in regards to the U.S. In the U.S. it is legal to own fully automatic weapons in 38 or 39 states. You do not have to already own a firearm of any kind, nor do you have to have a permit. In order to purchase any class 3 item, the only requirement is that you live in a state where it is legal, that you are 21 or older, and that you have no felonies or disqualifying misdemeanors. Basically, if you can legally purchase a handgun from a dealer, you can purchase NFA/Class 3 items.
18 theres alot of money and stuff involved to own one legally
In America, yes. You must have the proper paperwork and taxes paid.
