Pliers are two pieces of steel connected near the centre by a pivot. The same principle as scissors, but with much sturdier and different handle and blades. The handle parts of pliers are thick and straight and meant to be encompassed by the whole hand, so as to exert pressure on them. There are many different 'blades', the most common being two short, strong flat jaws to grip items. There can be long thin jaws , as in 'Long -nose pliers', and ones with jaws designed to hold specific objects. Some pliers have a 'slip-jaw' pivot, that allows them to open up to grip larger objects. Some others, such as the famous 'Channel -Lock' pliers can open up to a range of specific settings.
