Mashed POTATOES
Baked and mashed are easiest
Russet potatoes are best for creating baked potatoes
The most commonly used words are "creamy" and "buttery." Oddly, these also describe the two most common ingredients added to boiled potatoes when mashing (cream or half-n-half and butter.) um...yum :)
Most Chefs and home cooks recommend Russet potatoes for mashing, as they give the best flavor and texture. However, most any potatoes may be used. I have had delicious Alaskan Golden mashed potatoes, as well as new Red potatoes. But my favorite is still the Russet. Note: Potatoes called 'baking potatoes,' do not usually cook down to a soft texture, and therefore are not as nice to use as other potatoes.
Potato's come in two general varieties, waxy and starchy. The kind you want are the waxy variety, which hold their shape well when cooked in a liquid. The most common that people are familiar with are the red skinned, and the white skinned round potato's. If you are not sure about a particular potato, feel the skin. If it is drier, with a papery texture, it is probably a starchy potato and it will fall apart in a chowder. If the skin feels waxy, that's your best bet. Mashed potatoes is very high on my list- but other folks might choose biscuits, French fries, cole slaw, potato salad or beans. They are all good.
in my opinion the best food for a food fight is probably mashed potatoes and spaghetti
Just add fresh herbs that you like best.
White potatoes do not taste good after they have been frozen. You will notice a change in texture, lack of flavor and the potatoes lose nutrients. Mashed potatoes are so easy and quick to prepare that it is best to prepare eat them fresh. They are fine refrigerated for a couple of days.
Yam, and sweet potato are like a potato, except they are sweet. With yam being sweeter than the sweet potato, they are not the same plant despite popular belief. Also a vegetable called celery root, or celariac can apparently be made to taste like mashed potatoes. Yam and sweet potato are root tubers Celariac is a root vegetable
