The encomieda system was used during the Spanish colonization of the Americas to regulate Native American labor and autonomy. In the Spanish view it was very similar to the way serfs and peasants were treated in Europe. The people belonged to the overlord and owed their life labor and much of their production to him. In Russian this sort of system continued until the 1860's. In some [laces in Mexico it did not end until after the Revolution that started in 1910 and ended in 1920.

The encomienda was based on the familiar Reconquista institution in which adelantados were given the right to extract tribute from Muslims or other peasants in areas that they had conquered and resettled. In the New World, in practice, it was little different than slavery. Like they viewed the conquered Muslims of Spain, many Spanish viewed the Native Americans as under the influence of the devil and in need of strong repressive control. Bartolomé de las Casas was one of the key people that argued for the end of the system.
