Which was the first English colony in north America and when was it foundeed?

The first English colony comprising of men, women and boys was founded in 1587 on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. It failed. The first permanent settlement was at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607.

Two earlier reconnaissance voyages to Roanoke Island took place in 1584 and 1585 but they were not intended to be permanent settlements. They were reconnaissance trips to find a place suitable for a military bastion.
