They face the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israel (Talmud, Berakhot 30a). In America and Europe, that means they face east. But in Northern Israel, for instance, they face south, in Russia they'd face west, and in Africa they'd face north.
This is because the Temple was the center of Jewish worship from the time of King Solomon (First Temple) until the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE.
