How do you replace the rear brake pads on a 1989 Lincoln Mark VII LSC if you cannot remove the old ones?

DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE THIS , BUT, A SPECIAL TOOL IS REQUIRED TO TURN THE CALIPER BRAKE PISTON BACK INTO THE CALIPER TO ALLOW REMOVAL OF THE PADS THIS IS FOR REAR BRAKES ONLY , THIS SET UP IS PART OF THE PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE FOR THIS VEHICLE. Yes there is a special tool but you can get away with a c clamp it will turn as it goes in The only way to remove the brakes is to remove the entire caliper if the pins are stuck you would have to heat them up. Remember to put caliper grease on pins when reinstalling them .

How do you depress rear caliper on a 2004 Ford Freestar?

---- You have to turn it (caliper piston) as you are depressing the piston back into the caliper. You can't just "jam" it in. I used a caliper tool (for depressing the caliper) and turned the piston with large jaw pliers. This gives both inward pressure and the turning motion. I turned it clockwise and that seemed to work. There is a special tool you can buy to turn the piston as you push it back into the body of the caliper but if you work carefully and you are VERY aware of the rubber boot (don't rip it) then pliers are ok (don't tell the Ford dealer). Cover the pliers with something so you don't scratch/ruin the piston. The front brakes are just a standard push - don't need to turn them. Why do the back brakes work this way? Has to do with the parking brake. If you look you can see that it is attached to the caliper on the rear.

Why won't my Brake plunger on the caliper not compress?

there are two ways caliper pistons are made, one you can just use a c-clamp to push the piston back into the caliper; the other piston type must be screwed into the caliper with a special tool (inexpensive and readily available at your local auto parts store), but i must warn you, this "screw type" is very annoying to deal with, sometimes you have to start screwing it in with a pair of channel lock pliers b/c the tool wont fit in the caliper until the piston is most of the way back into the caliper, but be careful not to scar the outside of the piston and not to break or tear the seal

How do you get rear caliper piston to compress back on a 1997 cadillac deville?

It may turn back in rather than push back in like other caliper pistons. You can go to any parts store and by a cheap tool that has all different kinds of notches on it. find the right set of notches and turn it back into the caliper. If the piston is just round then you can buy another cheap tool and just leave the inside pad in the caliper and use the tool to push it all the way back in. be sure to take it slow turning or pushing the piston back in or you will have brake fluid all over the engine from forcing the fluid back into the line. cdhaze@msn.com

How do you depress rear disc brake caliper on Ford Freestar Mercury Monterey?

I assume it is the same as the 2004. You have to turn it while you are depressing it. It took two people to do mine. Once was turning while the other was pushing. Be careful not to damage the rubber boot around the caliper as well.I am sure Ford has some fancy tool that does both at the same time but we just used a caliper depressor and adjustable pliers. The trick is that the piston has to rotate and essentially screw itself back into the caliper. There are two notches in the face of the piston that a 'special' tool fits into to help you rotate it while pushing in.Late one Sunday afternoon was when I discovered this - no stores to get the 'right' tool from. I actually fabricated one out of a piece of galvanized pipe connector -and lots of grinding. Crude, but functional. Many parts stores have a tool loaner option. You may even find this tool at affordable prices if you check around.compress caliper pistonAssuming disc brakes, in 2004 up, the old c-clamp trick don't work any more ,the piston turns and presses at the same time, on some models, left handed. You will need a special tool. Yes there is a tool for retracting the rear caliper piston. The piston actually rotates as it retracts. The tool then has 2 prongs that fit into the face of the piston so you can rotate it while pushing inwards.FOUND A TOOL THAT WILL WORKI was having the same problem and went to Harbour Freight and decided to buy a caliper tool not kowing how to fix the problem yet. After reading this article I realized that I was lucky enough to buy the right tool to do the job. The tool does both push and turn and by only one person! it cost me $20 and it saved me a huge headache. You have to turn it (caliper piston) as you are depressing the piston back into the caliper. How do you compress a brake caliper on a Volvo s40?

to compress the caliper you need to buy a tool (its the only way) some sites say you can use long nose pliers but you need to have six hands any motor spare stockists will have one they say universal but its fine for the volvo to compress the caliper it has to turn as well has be pushed only needs to be used on the rear the front just push in hope this helps

How do you compress the caliper piston on a 2004 vw jetta tdi?

There is a tool available for the purpose. The tool fits into the caliper piston head notches, and has a turnscrew which rotates the caliper piston head while compressing it. Watch the caliper piston boot while turning, as it can catch and tear. It helps to use a small screwdriver to push the seal of the boot back slightly before compressing the piston; less likely to catch and tear that way. If you notice the boot pulling, back up on the turnscrew to relieve tension on the boot, and use the small screwdriver. I 'rented' the tool at Autozone; they put the cost of the tool on your credit card, then refund it when you return the tool.

How do you replace rear brake pads for a 2000 mustang V6 with rear disk brakes?

== == == == Loosen wheel lug nuts, jack up and support vehicle, finish removing wheel. Using a 13mm wrench, loosen the two caliper to pin bolts on the back of the caliper. This will release the caliper. Using a screwdriver, pry the caliper up and away from the bracket, the caliper should slide off the brake pads and be free from the bracket. Wire the caliper up and out of the way. Remove the pads. Using the special ford tool, place it on the caliper piston and turn the caliper piston back into the bore with a rachet and extention until it is seated all the way (turn clockwise). The ford tool fits into the notches on the caliper piston. Slide new pads into the caliper bracket, slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor, reattach the 13mm bolts and torque to 25lb/ft. If removing/replacing the rotor, remove the caliper and pads as outlined above, then continue by removing the caliper support bracket using a 15mm wrench on the two bolts holding it to the hub assembly. Remove the caliper bracket, then the rotor should come off. It may require a few taps with a rubber mallet to loosen. When reinstalling the caliper support bracket, torque the 15mm bolts to approx. 90 lb/ft. When reinstalling the wheel, torque lug nuts to approx 95 lb/ft

How do you remove front break rotors on a 2003 jeep grand Cherokee there is a caliper bracket in the way?

first remove the wheel then you need to remove the the caliper(it is in the way) it has two bolts on the back of the brake caliper(this is what holds your brake pads in place) after you have the caliper off be careful to not just let it hang as you could damage the line use a bungy cord to hold it up out of the way now you just pull or smack the rotor off it is not held in place by anything, the caliper and wheel hold it in place and now that they are off it is free it might be hard to break loose because of heat and corrosion but just give it a wack from the back with a rubber mallet and it will come free

How do you replace 2003 Nissan maxima rear disc brake pads?

I have 1997 cavalier the rear brake is grabbing what could cause this?

The caliper is probably sticking. With the car jacked up and on a jack stand and the wheel removed, see if you can turn the caliper. You can probably see what's sticking this way.

How do you retract the rear brake caliper on a 1998 Cadillac Deville?

YOUR GOING TO NEED A BRAKE CUBE, I BELIEVE THE ONLY WAY TO DEPRESS CALIPER IS TO SCREW IT BACK IN. ABOUT 13.00 BUCKS I was able to use the open end of a 3/4 inch box wrench to retract the caliper. Just stick it straight into the groves then I used a wracthet handle in the closed end of the wrench to spin it. Of course the proper tool is a better idea but if you already have the car apart as I did works in a pinch. Howie:great advise on the caliper it does screw in but when you at turning it you can also if you have on use a pully fork and a pair of channel locks to turn caliper, faster and saves you 25.00 at autozone.
