Clockwise, unless it is one of those other cars that you have to turn it Counter-Clockwise: without knowing the exact year, model, and engine of the vehicle it is impossible to answer this question.

A typical American made vehicle would require turning the balancer bolt counterclockwise to remove it.

How do you remove the harmonic balancer in a 1995 Nissan Maxima GLE?

Start by removing the right front tire and support the vehicle with a jack stand. Then remove lower portion of the splash guard near the harmonic balancer. Remove all drive belts. First remove the A/C alternator belt. Loosen the 14mm bolt at the front of the belt tensioner and then loosen the tensioner bolt (it is the one that's sticking straight up, you use a 14mm socket on it.). The power steering adjuster bolt will be accessed from the bottom near the power steering pump. It has a 12mm bolt head on it. You will break the jamb bolt loose first and then loosen the adjusting bolt. Remove belts. Then remove harmonic balancer bolt (19mm). If the harmonic balancer will not slide off the crankshaft then use a two finger gear puller. Place the harmonic balancer bolt back in the crankshaft but do not tighten it. Leave it about a half inch from being all the way in. Next place the puller on to the harmonic balancer. (one finger on each side securely press into the belt groove.) The center puller bolt will rest against the harmonic balancer bolt head. Tighten the puller bolt and make sure the harmonice balancer bolt does not turn. The balancer should come off at this point.

Is the thread reversed on a Chevy Malibu 2001 harmonic balancer?

Yes, the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer in place on a 2001 Chevy Malibu is reverse thread. I learned that the hard way and stripped the head of my bolt down to nothing. And the bolt is almost impossible to find, because they no longer make them.

How do you install a harmonic balancer on a 1999 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3?

The engine has a harmonic balancer on it, but if it is off, it is easy to re-install. Simply line up the key and tap it on most of the way and torque down the center bolt.

How do you change a harmonic balancer on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 L?

Remove the belt. Remove the bolt that attaches the harmonic balancer. Rent or purchase a harmonic balancer puller. Follow the Instructions with the puller and remove the old balancer. Install the new balancer making sure to line up the keyway, a little oil helps. Put the retaining bolt back in and tighten to manufacture specs.

How does the harmonic balancer tighten on a 1989 jeep Cherokee Laredo without turning the crank over?

Easiest way is with an air impact. There are strap clamps available that would go around the harmonic balancer that would hold it while the bolt was tightened.

What is the proper way to remove harmonic balancer on 67 lemans 326 motor?

After removing the harmonic balancer retaining bolt and washer (you may need to immobilize the crankshaft by securing the flywheel ring gear), you will need to use a tool known as a wheel puller or a hub puller, such as a KD2251 as made by KD Tools. The tool consists of a long center bolt that runs through a center threaded hub attached to three adjustable splayed arms with holes in each at the working end. By bolting each arm to the existing pulley retention bolt holes in the harmonic balancer and then turning the long center bolt of the hub puller clockwise into the center of the crankshaft snout, the harmonic balancer will be "pulled" from the crankshaft. Be certain to utilize a wide centering point in the end of the long center puller bolt to prevent damage to the threads in the crankshaft snout. The harmonic balancer can be reinstalled by utilizing various length bolts which fit the threaded hole in the crankshaft snout, a heavy washer, and appropriately sized spacers. After carefully aligning the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft snout, using a longer bolt, tighten (clockwise) the bolt into the end of the crankshaft. When this bolt runs out of travel remove the bolt and replace with a shorter bolt or employ shims. Repeat until the harmonic balancer reaches the shoulder on the crankshaft. reinstall the harmonic balancer retention bolt and washer, tightening it to the required torque specification. All of this is true....but Pontiac did not use an interference or press fit balancer. Most of the time once you have removed the large bolt in the center they can just be pulled right out. Installation is usually done by just pushing it back on. There are the occasional tough ones though that will have to be pulled with a puller.
