The spring goes into the block.
u didnt mention what size engine..either way just follow the upper raditor hose from the raditor
The spring side of any thermostat always goes towards the engine.

unplug the bulb, then remove the metal clips on front of headlight that secure it to the grill. pull the headlight straight out of the front of the grill. This is the best way to change the bulb as well.
Loosen the alternator bracket, move it out of the way. The thermostat is at the end of the upper radiator hose where it curves into the engine
Follow the big hose from the top of the radiator to the engine block. You should find a removable housing that contains the thermostat. After you remove this, remember which way the thermostat is installed so you replace it correctly.
spring side will go in block were top hose connect
If it is similar to Ford, there is a small button on the side of the switch (behind dash) when pressed the push/pull handle will come all the way out allowing you to remove switch from rear
