His greatest goal was to lead the Mormons from Illinois to Utah. Once that was achieved, he continued to lead the Mormons through peace and prosperity. To that end, it was very important to him that Utah become a state, and that the rights of the Mormons be preserved and protected. To lower the Infant Mortality Rate, he sent many women back East to learn medicine.

Brigham Young was a very successful leader. The most important thing he did was lead the Mormons from Illinois to Utah. Here is a list of some of his other successes:

  1. Brigham Young successfully established the perpetual emigration fund (PEF) by which many Mormons were able to emigrate from England to Utah. By re-paying the Church for the expenses of their emigration, the Church was able to fund the emigration of more people.
  2. Brigham Young successfully colonized Utah and many of the surrounding states.
  3. Brigham Young successfully laid out one of the finest street systems in the world. All the towns in Utah have a Center Street and a Main Street which intersect in the middle of town. The streets are then laid out in a north-south-east-west grid and numbered relative to their distance from Main Street and Center Street; for example, 100 North, 100 South, 100 East, 100 West, 200 North, 200 South, 200 East, 200 West, etc. It makes it super-easy to find addresses even today, without a GPS device!

He was the Senior Apostle (meaning the one called the earliest) at the death and martyrdom of the first prophet, Joseph Smith. For many years afterwards the church continued without a formally recognized Prophet. It wasn't until after the pioneer saints arrived in the Salt Lake, UT valley and had a general conference of the church that all the church formally recognized and accepted him as the next prophet to lead the church.

The church wrote an entire book about Brigham Young that was used for several years in Sunday school classes worldwide. It can be found online at: www.lds.org Under Gospel Library.
