Most of Africa was colonies of one European nation or another during the war. The German Empire had a few African colonies, such as German East Africa. But Germany's opponents had a lot more, France, Great Britain, Italy and Belgium. Portugal had a few colonies in Africa too. French Colonial troops, such as the Senegalese, fought on the western front, in the trenches.
Africa has never been split into two countries.

The United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal all had colonies in Africa. The Netherlands also at one time had colonies. The United States is also credited with having a colony, Liberia, though technically it was not an actual colony, just administered by the US.
Belgium is in Europe
The British Empire controlled and still do control some countries around the world. South Africa and most of the middle East were under British control. Britain gave a piece of its empire to the Jewish people and created the country of Israel as well.
King Leopold went to Africa because he had made several unsuccessful attempts to acquire land for establishing Belgium colonies in other manners. He knew that the only way to obtain this land was to travel there himself.
