The Presidential Succession Law of 1947 provides for the possiblity of simultaneous disability of both the president and vice president. In order for these individuals to assume the presidency, they must also meet all the legal requirements to serve as president. * 1. Vice President of the United States * 2. Speaker of the House * 3. President pro tempore of the Senate Then followed by the President's Cabinet in the following order of succession: * 4. Secretary of State * 5. Secretary of the Treasury * 6. Secretary of Defense * 7. Attorney General * 8. Secretary of the Interior * 9. Secretary of Agriculture * 10. Secretary of Commerce * 11. Secretary of Labor * 12. Secretary of Health & Human Services * 13. Secretary of Housing & Urban Development * 14. Secretary of Transportation * 15. Secretary of Energy * 16. Secretary of Education * 17. Secretary of Veterans' Affairs * 18. Secretary of Homeland Security
According to the current Presidential Succession set out in the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, the next person in line after the Vice President is the current Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Do note that if the President is replaced by the Vice President, a new Vice President can be appointed. The office of the Vice President does NOT remain vacant - it is vacant only until a new V.P. is appointed and confirmed by the a simple majority of both houses of Congress. Thus, if the President dies and the current V.P. succeeds to the office of the President, that new President can nominate a new V.P. That new V.P. will then become President should the new President (the original V.P.) die. The Speaker becomes president only if there is no current V.P.
The President pro tempore of the Senate is the next in line of succession.
The Speaker of the house would be President.
aka Nancy Pelosi
Even before the vice president died the speaker becomes vice and he would pick a speaker and that would go on and on and on and on....
The next person in line after The President, is The Vice President, then Speaker of the House, then President pro tempore of the Senate.
In this case the President pro tempore of the US Senate would become President.
Do not know
assuming BOTH the Pres. and the VP are unable, next in line is the Speaker of the House. It's never happened before but it's come close.
There is a presidential line of succession specified by the United States Constitution and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947. If the president and vice president were to both die, the Speaker of the House of Representatives would inherit the position.
The Speaker Of The House
When the President dies and the Vice become President he then picks a new Vice, and the cycle continues. Vice -> Pres ---------------------------------------- No, that's not how it works. First off the two never travel together so they can't be killed at the same time, but if the president dies the vice precident takes over and does not appoint a vice. The position remains open. If the vice then dies the next in command takes over. That would be the secretary of state. ---------------------------------------- Actually, after the president dies, the vice president becomes president, and if he dies, then the SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE becomes the new president........ ---------------------------------------- To add to the correction, the first paragraph above is correct. The second paragraph (the first correction) is very, very wrong. First of all, the President and VP could easily die at the same time. They could be assassinated at the same function, a nuclear attack could kill both, etc. Secondly, if the President dies, the VP becomes President and appoints a new VP, who then is confirmed by a majority of both houses of Congress. It is only if both the President and the VP die at the same time, or the President dies and then the VP who became President dies before he has appointed a new VP, that the Speaker of the House becomes President. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the last guy was right, the president pro tempore becomes president after the speaker of the house...comes secretary of state, treasury, defense, attorney general, secretary of interior, agriculture, commerce, labor....finally a couple of people later it ends with the secretary of homeland security...
President pro tempore is the presiding officer of US senate. His responsibility is to maintain order and decorum of the house and its regulations. Normally the senior most senator from majority party is elected as President pro tempore.
speaker of house.
The Speaker of the House is the second in line of succession behind the vice president.
Speaker of the House
speaker of the house then president pro temp then secretary of state
No US President has gone on to become Speaker after their presidency. The closest thing to that was when former President Taft was made the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court in 1921. The only Speaker of the House to become President was James K. Polk. President Gerald Ford, when nominated to become Vice President in 1973, was serving as the House Minority Leader. Lyndon Johnson, when elected Vice President, was the Senate Majority Leader.
James Knox Polk is the only US President to have held that office.
the house speaker
If both the President and the Vice President are unable to serve, then the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives would become President.
The speaker of the house is very important. He/she becomes president of the US in the event the President and vice president become unable to hold their office.
