The M16, a 5.56x45mm assault rifle, is based on the AR-15 rifle originally designed by Eugene Stoner, and produced by ArmaLite. Upon entering service with the United States armed forces, the M16 name was adopted, and the contract to build these rifles was given to Colt's Manufacturing Company. Since then Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal (FNH), H&R Firearms, the General Motors Hydramatic Division, and Sabre Defence have also built the M16 rifle for the U.S. military.
