In the 7th century BCE, the old temple was destroyed by a flood, and it was rebuilt around 550 BCE, under the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes, paid for by King Croesus of Lydia: It temple was destroyed in 356 BCE by Herostratus in an act of arson and was again rebuilt, this version being labelled one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was finally destroyed by Christians in 401 CE to eliminate it as a competitor, and its stones used in other buildings.
