He totally reversed Grant's strategy of concentrating on the destruction of the Confederate armies, and set about attacking the infrastructure that supported those armies.
Burning the farms, killing the livestock, freeing the slaves. These punitive measures shattered civilian morale in Georgia, and the Southern troops were barefoot and starving by the time they surrendered five months later.
