Leonidas Polk had moved into Tennessee at the urging of Joe Johnston with his whole Army from Alabama/Mississippi. He had orders only to send enough effectives to held Johnston hold his position but came in stead with his whole Army.
Polk stood at Rome while Johnston stood at Rocky Face Ridge y Dalton while the Federals demonstrated at his front. The loss of MacPherson from the Confederate Radar, so to speak, cause Johnston enough concernt to halt a brigade of 1,400 men under James Cantey at Resaca and reinforce it to 4,000 men to awiat further developments, Resaca being the ideal place to deploy a new force to either Dalton or Rome should he need to.
The emergance of MacPherson and his Army of the Tennessee from Snake Creek Gap brought the Confederate Army of Tennessee down to Resaca over two/three days and Polk's Army from Rome in the same period of time. The Battle fo Resaca followed, which was hard fought but eventually superior numbers won the day.

It took place at Atlanta, Georgia. "During the months leading up to the battle, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston had repeatedly retreated from Sherman's superior force. All along the railroad line from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Marietta, Georgia, a pattern was played and replayed: Johnston would take up a defensive position, Sherman would march to outflank the Confederate defenses, and Johnston would retreat again. After Johnston's withdrawal following the Battle of Resaca, the two armies clashed again at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, but the Confederate senior leadership in Richmond was unhappy with Johnston's perceived reluctance to fight the Union army, even though he had little chance of winning. Thus, on July 17, 1864, as he was preparing for the Battle of Peachtree Creek, Johnston was relieved of his command and replaced by Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood.[8] The dismissal and replacement of Johnston was one of the most controversial decisions of the Civil War.[9] Hood commanded approximately 51,000 men[3] against Sherman commanding almost 100,000 men.[2] Hood, who was fond of taking risks,[8] lashed out at Sherman's army at Peachtree Creek, but the attack failed with almost five thousand Confederate casualties. !

Union General Sherman began his Georgia campaign in May of 1864. He was successful in launching a wide turning maneuver with about 25,000 troops. General Johnston's lines of communications were almost cut by the Union assault, however Johnston was able to retreat and protect those lines. This was at a cost, however, as Johnston had to abandon Dalton and Resaca Georgia.
The Battle of Rocky Face Ridge saw the Union forces under the commands of generals George Thomas, James McPherson and John Scofield converged on May 7, 1864 on Confederate forces holding Rocky Face Ridge.
