Dedication of the Washington MonumentWashington Monument was dedicated on February 22, 1885 (Washington's birthday). Those speaking to the crowd of 800 were Ohio senator John Sherman, Washington National Monument Society's William Wilson Corcoran, Thomas Lincoln Casey of the Army Corps of Engineers and United States President Chester Arthur. After the speeches at the Monument, dignitaries and the crowd were led to the Capitol building by General William T. Sherman, where Representative John Davis Long read a speech given 37 years earlier at the laying of the cornerstone. Virginia governor John W. Daniel gave the final speech.
