Technically, nobody burst Rome into flames and started their own empire. Consuls who came far after Alexander the great, Julius Caesar and Octavian Augustus were part of foolish dynasties (Tarquins, Caligula, Nero, etc.), and this created disorder in Europe. By the time the Crusades and Alaric came around in the years of castles and knights and serfs, the Roman Empire was dead from warfare.

Around 500 CE. the western half of the empire was invaded by a series of northern tribes (Franks, Goths, and the Asian Vandals). Rome was sacked in the end. But the eastern half lasted a thousand years after that. Until the Ottomans came one day and sacked Constantinople (Istanbul today).

Hittite society broke down due to civil war driven by claims to the throne, as well as the external threat of the 'sea people'.

They eventually broke down into neo-hittite cities that lasted until 400 B.C before either falling under control of contemporary civilizations, fading into other cultures, or dying out.

From what I understand, this is an account of historical Hittites (or Nesites), not the biblical Hittites (people of Hatti)
