Best Answer

Russia, or at least its fleet and Asian ambitions, was defeated by the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905).
The Russians had established a naval presence in Port Arthur (Lushunkou), as part of their greater aspirations in Manchuria. The Japanese attacked the port, then invaded Korea and began a siege, and their forces defeated a large Russian army at the Battle of Mukden in February, 1905. Then they sank most of the Russian battleships sent to recapture Port Arthur in the Battle of Tsushima (May, 1905). With its largest army defeated and its naval power decimated, Russia sued for peace. Japan, however, remained in control of Korea until after World War II in 1945.

They won the Russo-Japanese War against Russia in 1905.

To the world's surprise, Japan defeated Russia's fleet in the Battle of Tsushima in May, 1905 . The end of the war came with the Treaty of Portsmouth. As a settlement of Russia's defeat, Japan acquired the southern half of Sakhalin Island, Port Arthur, and Russia's sphere of influence in southern Manchuria. For helping to negotiate the peace treaty, US President Teddy Roosevelt received the Nobel Peace Prize.
