Queen Elizabeth succeeded. Period. She did not succeed IN because the word succeed as used here does not mean to be proficient at, but to become the ruler in place of someone else. She succeeded her father King George VI who died of lung cancer while she was away in Africa.

She succeeded Mary (Bloody Mary)

Elizabeth succeeded her older sister: Queen Mary I

Mary was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and Katharine of Aragon.

Mary is generally accepted as the first Queen of England as both Empress Matilda and Jane Grey's claim to the throne is disputed.
