Primarily the American colonists fought the British, which included all of the coutries in Great Britain: England, Ireland, Scottland & Wales. It has been said that many American colonial leaders wanted to pursue the British into Canada but eventually relented due to the mounting cost of the war, which had been running for 8 years, most of which were filled with some of the most brutal winters experienced in colonial hstory.
