Somebody asked if Columbus did any voyaging for the French govt, No! You must be thinking of LaSalle or the French Voyageurs.
Columbus sailed for the king and queen of Spain, (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella).
He technically sailed for the West Indies and China. What he didn't know was that the landmass that is now called the Americas were blocking the way.
