The first story appeared in the 12th century. Like Robin Hood it would have been a poem told by a traveling bard. This means the people in the story would be added, dropped, or changed in some way. In 1485 the first English story was published. The French stories focused on Lancelot more than Arthur and his knightly adventures include the rescue of Guinevere, but failed to find the Holy Grail.

Arthur was always in love with his wife Guinevere. When she held an affair with Lancelot, Arthur was stuck in a love triangle, his brotherly love for Lancelot, and his romantic love for Guinevere.
