The Blue Mountains were known from the time of European settlement in 1788. No single person specifically "discovered" them, but they were a hindrance to the development and expansion of Australia's first settlement, Sydney.

The Blue Mountains were successfully crossed by explorers Lawson, Blaxland and Wentworth in 1813, some 25 years after the first settlement.
