The British vote for a person to represent them and their electorate. Political parties with the largest number of representatives form a majority government. Often representatives are independent of any particular political party. It matters not. Sometimes a coalition government is formed between a major and minor party or with independent representatives.

Many of today's Lords are life peers, with the title passing to their off-spring, usually male but female since 1963.
