Hitler wanted to take the USSR because like britain and France, the USSR was part of the treaty of versailles agreement. Also Germany wanted to expand it's living space, so Hitler took on the USSR and plan to conquer it without loosing many life nor wasting too much resources. This is explained in Germa plans of Operation Barbarossa. Germany wanted to conquer the USSR'S Oil reserves, it's Major tank production factory and it's main agricultural fields. all of this was in Western USSR.
