The Colorado River.

The standard school of thought was that the flow of water following glacial activity created the Grand Canyon
Recent studies are putting forth the theory that a severe geological event created the Grand Canyon - and the river is a result of "water chooses the easiest path to flow"
either way - the Grand Canyon is certainly "Grand"
Its history dates back to 10,500 years ago when the native Americans first saw the place. Evidence of early socities have been found in the place. Historians agree that many groups such as the Anasazi, the Cohonina, the Cerbat, Paiutes and the Navajo settled there. In 1540, the first non native American visited the place led by the Spanish Captain Garcia Lopez de Cardenas. After about 200 years, 2 unpopular priests from Spain saw the Canyon. The Powell Geographic Expedition led by U.S. Army Major John Wesley Powell was launched in 1869 through the Grand Canyon. This expedition helped in finding the geology of the place and also it helped in the discovery of mineral resources in the site like asbestos and copper.
Hope this helps.
Coronado, another Spaniard, traveled to Mexico where the Spanish had found tremendous amounts of gold. He left Mexico with a troop of soldiers and African slaves in 1540 to look for more gold. These hardy men traveled over the Southwest region of the country that was later to be called the United States. They left records of their discovery of the Grand Canyon and the land in Arizona and New Mexico. Coronado never saw the Grand Canyon since he went on a different route then his other men. The Spaniards knew that it exiisted from their Hopi informers, but it was first viewed by Captain Garcia Lopez de Cardenas in 1540.
The first European known and recorded to have visited the Grand Canyon was Captain de Cardenas. A Naval expedition through the Sea of Cortez is thought by some historians to have sighted the Canyon a few months earlier but probably never got further inland then present day Yuma Arizona.
