A barbarian leader named Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman emperor in AD 476, and he ruled Italy for a time, but by then Rome was no longer the capital. Ravenna was used as the seat of power by the later emperors, and by Odoacer and others who followed him, because its location made it much more defensible.
