north
This New South would have industries based on coal, iron, tobacco, cotton, lumber, and the region's other abundant resources.
The Union (north of the United States) was in war with the Confederates (south of the United States. The Union tried to starve the south out by making a blockade. The way the south stopped it was by putting iron on its ships and shooting cannons at the other ships.
Iron Ore and Coal
This would have been when the first coal fields were found and developed. Coal was certainly exploited before oil or natural gas. The early colonists would have relied on wood which was abundant, for cooking and keeping warm in the winter. I'm not sure if any coal was found in New England however or whether that depended on getting further inland. I suppose small amounts of coal might have been brought from England by sea, but only for iron working and other tasks like that. By making and using charcoal you can get some iron work done. This is a history topic rather than an energy one.
The basic wealth of the North was in their ability to manufacture products from raw materials. Thus we have the North importing cotton for example to have the North's textile mills produce clothing and other products. The North also had a machinery building industry that used iron ore and coal to keep the steel mills working and producing, as example, rails for the expanding railroad industry. The North also had a ship building industry and a fishing industry. Certain States and territories grew grains such as wheat and barely. The North also had a "weapons" building sector as well. In addition New York City was becoming a greater financial center. The construction industry was also a plus for the North.

The North had 11 principle manufacturing sities, while the South had only 2. The huge copper, iron, and coal deposits in the North provided abudant resources for manufacturing, while the more extensive railroad system helped ditribute resources and products.
