The Concept of God It is impossible to answer who first had the idea that God (or gods) exist. What is certain is that concepts of a supreme being existed before the written language. Examples of apparently supreme beings can be seen in cave drawings; also, when Europeans travelled to the places without written languages such as the Amazon and central Africa, they found people who believed in God/gods/spirits. Thousands of years ago, people did not have a scientific explanation for such things as why rain falls, what keeps the sun in the sky or why earthquakes occur. It would have been a logical conclusion that a supernatural force was responsible. The Idea of God As to the idea of what this God (or gods) is like, people would have formed understandings according to how they experienced the world e.g. if the rains fell on the crops then the supreme being was benevolent; if the rains failed then the supreme being was annoyed for some reason. With the advent of the monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism) a change took place in the understanding of God; these groups maintain that God has revealed key aspects of the Divine character (e.g. mercy, love) that could not have been reasoned through observation of the world or universe. This brought about a development in the idea people held of God. Related links: http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God
