It's a little known fact that Slash very nearly ended up playing bass, because he was friends as a teenager with Steven Adler who had at that point decided to play guitar and wanted Slash to be the bassist in his band. It was only when Slash heard the difference between guitar and bass that he decided on guitar, and not for some years that Adler switched to drums.
