To support the statement, the end of European colonial empires and the emergence of national self-determination; the weakening of European powers because of the two world wars; the rise of a number of developing nations, including India and China; the reaction against Western cultural influences, especially in the Islamic world; and the emergence of communism as a rival system to the Western capitalist model.Evidence that contradicts the statement includes the continued influence of Europe and the United States as political and military powers and on the world economy; the continued cultural influence of Europe and the United States; and the collapse of communist states in the final decades of the twentieth century.(Source: binghamsplace.com/what-works/strayer-24)
Saint Augustine basically 'rebranded' much of Aristotle's ethical work for Christianity in the 3rd century AD. The connotation changed, for example Aristotle's "ethikos arete" (best ethics) becomes the "virtues" under early catholicism; "virtue" specifically relates to masculine excellence. Terms like 'polis' were removed and replaced with Deus (God). Aristotle's work was still fresh on the agenda for future Christian writers (such as Aquinas) and philosophers (such as Descartes); both place great emphasis on his hierachies. Arguably Aristotle represents an indigenous European philosophy that never left us, yet differing agendas have made us forget this continuity.
During Medieval Europe, the three forms of literature included religious writings. Other forms of literature that were found during this time include secular works and women's literature.
The period is usually called the High Middle Ages. This was not a 'dark age' as is sometimes assumed. It is the period in which Europe saw Christianity being established, the foundation of major cities and of several great Universities that mostly still exist today. it it also the period of the 'Carolingian Renaissance' to which we owe the survival of most of the ancient scriptures from Greece and Rome, since Charlemagne and his successors had made a point of having these copied and carefully kept in the Monasteries in their lands. Even before the Renaissance period, the works of Aristotle had because of this copying work been rediscovered and were avidly studied. Basically this period laid the foundation on which the ensuing Renaissance period would build.
