∙ 11y agoThe Roman monarchy was overthrown by a popular revolt which broke out becasue the last king was a tyrant. The revolt was led by Lucius Junius Brutus who was also the architect of the reforms which created the republican institutions. Lucius Junius Brutus was killed in a battle soon afterwards. The most prominent man in the next few years was Pulius Valerius Publicola.

The Alemanni took advantage of this to take over north-eastern France, Switzerland and Austria. The Franks, who had been allowed to settle in Holland south of the river Rhine, Belgium and Luxembourg by the Romans, expanded into northern and central Gaul, forming the kingdom of the Franks
These Germanic peoples carved the empire. They formed their own kingdoms in former lands of the empire: the kingdom of the Vandals in north-western Africa, the kingdom of the Visigoths in Spain and Portugal, and the kingdom of the Burgundians in eastern France.
The Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians migrated to Britannia in waves and eventually took it over.
The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist into the Middle Ages.
