The first windmill was built by Heron of Alexandria in the 1st century (AD).

Windmills, were used in the Islamic civilization as early as the 7th century, to grind grains and for irrigation purposes. The great tenth century Arab Historian and Geographer Al-Masudi(896-956), has mentioned the existence of windmills in Seistan in 950 AD. Windmills appeared in Europe, in the 12th century.

Windmills were invented in Persia long ago during A.D. 600. They were first invented for grinding grain but then discovered to be useful for more, centuries later. Many people get credit for the invention of the windmill because they used it and made it for different reasons. That's why some windmills are horizontal and vertical.
