Anna Anderson was someone who was very similar to Anastasia. Some believed she was Anastasia, who had escaped from death and lost her memory, probably out of fear. Some thought it was just a coincidence that she was quite a bit like the princess. But there hasn't been a definite answer yet.
Anna Anderson was born Franziska Franchowska a polish factory worker who disappeared around the same time the Romanovs were in captivity in Ekaterinburg. Franchowska, pulled from a canal in Berlin in 1921 after an apparent suicide attempt saw a picture of the Romanov grand duchess' and became transfixed first with Tatiana then Anastasia. Several European courts played host to this imposter, financially backing her as well as acting on her behalf with the Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna for official recognition as Her Imperial Highness, Grand Duchess Anastasia. This never happened. Anderson as Franchowska later called herself went as far as taking her case before a court of law, which became a sort of tabloid fodder for cafe society in the 1940's. By the end of World War II most of Andersons supporters had wearied of her and she sailed for America. Wealthy American society were only too anxious to entertain a Russian "princess". By the late 1950's Anderson with her unpredictable temper, her petulance and rudeness (all of which she topped off with a regal imperiousness that was often times quite cruel) had outstayed her welcome in the great homes of New York and Newport and her novelty in the United States had worn off too. Anna Anderson settled finally in Virginia, marrying a man twenty years her junior; Jack Manahan. Manahan dotted on Anderson and encouraged her idiosyncrasies, which became quite erratic in her later years. She passed away in 1984 never admitting her true persona and never did receive official recognition by the Imperial family in exile. Tissue from Anderson was compared with that of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburg in 1996. Anna Anderson was not Anastasia of Russia. Indeed this is one of histories little "farces" which unfortunately for histories sake captures the fascination in us all that Fairy Tales exist. Depends on what people think. I believe the Romanovs and other relatives of the Romanovs were Anna Anderson's family. And I believe Anna Anderson was Anastasia. Look at pictures of Anna Anderson and compare them to pictures of Anastasia when she was a young girl.
The only real husband that Anna Anderson had was John Manahan. She married him in the late 1960's.
